ERP Systems (ERP)

The module aims to establish a sound theoretical basis of state-of-the-art theories in the field of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and its various modules and applications. The course focuses on how the different business processes are implemented using an ERP system such as SAP ERP or SYSPRO. Three processes are examined in more detail, namely: procurement, sales and marketing and production. In summary, the core content of the ERP module are functions and features of ERP systems, core concepts of ERP systems, analysis of the financial, inventory and procurement module of an ERP system and the comparision of typical business processes of a selected ERP system.

Description and Purpose

The module aims to:
  • Explore and compare concepts of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and its various modules and applications
  • Expose students to hands-on exercises with an ERP system (e.g. SAP and/or SYSPRO) to create master and transactional data in the financial, procurement and inventory modules.

Prior Knowledge

The attendee needs to be computer literate and have knowledge of computer fundamentals and business processes management.

After the completion of this module learners will be able to:

  • Describe the components provided by ERP modules
  • Discuss the evolution of ERP systems
  • Compare the advantages and drawbacks of ERP systems
  • Understand the role of stakeholders in the ERP implementation process
  • Explain issues of customization versus adoption of vendor software as is
  • Comprehend the ethical, global and security challenges while implementing an ERP system
  • Identify ERP system options and selection methods
  • Identify criteria used for selecting ERP vendors and software
  • Analyse ERP project management techniques
  • Discuss the concept of lean manufacturing in the context of ERP
  • Perform hands-on exercises with an ERP system to create master and transactional data in the financial, procurement and inventory modules
